Abstract

The Brazilian Penitentiary System is marked by gaps in public policy in the criminal area, especially in maternal and child health. This study aimed to evaluate the anthropometric profile of children in the breastfeeding phase to compare what is recommended by the Ministry of Health (MS in portuguese). This is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach, performed in November 2011 in a female prison in the Distrito Federal. Information was obtained of 20 mothers and children in the prison records. The results shows an effective policy to breastfeeding and growth of children. However demonstrate that failure is still an issue that needs improvement and enhancement.
