Abstract

Introduction: water is a vital element for sustaining life. It is essential for the functioning and balance of all body metabolism. Objective: to verify through literature, the importance of adequate water intake in adolescent health. Method: an integrative literature review was performed, using the LILACS, Medline and BDENF databases from BIREME/Virtual Health Library, and the descriptors “Water” AND “Adolescent Health” between 1st and 4th October 2019. Results: thirteen articles were found that answered the research question. The following topics summarize the discussions found in these articles: importance of water in the adolescent school life, the relationship of water with body mass index, weight and overweight, the influence of parents on water consumption by children, and the use of disposable cups in drinking fountains to increase water consumption by adolescents. Conclusion: water contributes to the reduction of overweight and obesity, improves visual attention and becomes essential for adolescents. The articles analyzed indicate that most adolescents do not drink daily amount recommended, which makes it a public health concern. New mechanisms must be thought out to promote adequate water intake by adolescents.
