Association Between the Level of Physical Activity and Chronic Diseases not Transmissible

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs) and their possible association with the level of physical activity and sedentary behavior of elderly users of Basic Health Units (BHU). This is a descriptive, cross-sectional, epidemiological study conducted with 654 elderly men and women, BHU users from the city of Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. Sociodemographic and health data were searched. The level of physical activity and sedentary behavior was evaluated through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), short version. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Krustal-Wallis and Chi-Square, using a significance level of p<0.05. Systemic arterial hypertension is the most prevalent NCD in the elderly (57.9%). Elderly BHU users with three or more associated morbidities performed fewer days of moderate activities per week compared to the elderly with none or one or two. Low levels of physical activity are associated with some CNCDs (heart disease, stroke, pulmonary disease) in the elderly BHU users.
