Relationship between VO2max. and Maximal Aerobic Speed in Professional Soccer Players from Paraguay
Abstract
The assessment of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max.) has been established as the most specific measure for aerobic capacity. Superior aerobic performance has been associated with a high level of competitiveness and adaptations to high intensity training. The maximum aerobic speed (MAS) has been defined as the minimum speed at which the VO2max. is reached and represents an index of sustainable aerobic power. Training at MAS is the ideal intensity to achieve a speed at maximum VO2max., In addition to achieving a lower VO2 for a given running speed, which is advantageous and translates into better running economy. Objective: To determine the relationship between VO2max. and MAS in professional Paraguayan first division soccer players. Methods: Investigation of non-experimental design, quantitative and correlational approach. Sampling was intentional non-probabilistic. 81 first division soccer players participated. Aerobic Power protocol was administered to test and obtain the maximum oxygen consumption and the maximum aerobic speed. Results: A positive and significant relationship (Rho=0.47; p<0.01) was found between the variables VO2 and VAM with bilateral direction. Conclusion: The higher the oxygen consumption, the higher the aerobic speed reached by the athletes could be and vice versa, the lower the soccer player's ability to consume oxygen, the lower their aerobic speed could be.
