The Paralympic Games as Propellant of Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract

The inclusion of people with disabilities is a constant concern for educators, health professionals and national and international entities. One of the most effective ways to achieve this goal is through Paralympic sport. Therefore, this essay aims to trace the historical evolution of sport and Paralympic competitions, with special attention to the crucial role played by Paralympic Games, establishing the relationship of how Paralympic Games are established in sporting events that drive the Sustainable Development Goals. At the same time, the concern of the United Nations with the evolutionary paths of human society will be addressed, materialized in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), established by the 2030 Agenda. The document indicates 17 SDGs and 169 goals, grouped in three different focal points: personal, ecological and spiritual, established to eradicate poverty and promote a dignified life for all, within the limits of the planet. When comparing Paralympic ideals with the SDGs, there is a consistent interface in the SDGs: 3) Health and well-being; 4) Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; 5) Gender equality; 11) Sustainable communities and cities; 16) Peace, justice and effective institutions.
