Physical Activity and Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases During Social Isolation in the State of São Paulo

Abstract

Distancing and social isolation measures were taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and modified the population's lifestyle, making it difficult to practice physical activity (PPA), which is recognized as an adjunct to the treatment of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NDC). Thus, the objective of this study was to verify the situation of people with NDC in the state of São Paulo, regarding PPA during a period of social isolation by COVID-19. Data were collected through a digital survey, with 212 volunteers reached through the Snowball method, who reported having some NDC; the average age was 42.2±13.7 years; 71.20% had higher education; 84.9% indicated insufficient PPA; 89.2% had inadequate screen time; 87.3% reported mild food insecurity. A significant correlation was found between inadequate PPA and food insecurity (p=0.027). There was also a bivariate association between screen time and food insecurity (p=0.049). The low practice of physical activity as well as the reported food insecurity point to risks of increase in the manifestation of NDC and it is necessary to promote public policies to carry out PPA even in times of pandemics, aimed at this portion of the population.
