Biochemical Markers of Muscle Injuries in Soccer Players

Abstract

Introduction: Soccer demands great physical performance from athletes, implying a possible increase in injuries and muscle microtraumas. The present study evaluated biochemical, immunological and hematological markers to predict muscle injuries in athletes when submitted to a soccer game. Methods: Athletes from Esporte Clube São José de Porto Alegre, who played 70 minutes of a soccer match, aged between 15 and 20 years, were included in the study. Blood samples were collected for evaluation of markers in five moments: Pre-season (PT), Pre-game (PJ), 24 hours post-game (P24H), 48 hours post-game (P48H) and 72 hours post-game (P72H). Blood count, inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, CXCL-8 and TNF-α), biochemical markers creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), blood electrolytes, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium were evaluated. Results: The athletes showed statistical significance (p <0.05) in the levels of CK, LDH, levels of electrolytes, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α and in the hematological analysis. Conclusions: Muscle microtraumas were observed in these players, suggesting that CK, LDH and IL-6 markers may offer a diagnostic tool for injuries induced by high performance sports.
