Impact of the Second Wave of COVID-19 on Quality of Life and Level of Physical Activity

A Study in Elderly People from Manaus, Amazonas

Abstract

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has impacted the lifestyle, especially of the elderly, and the consequences of sudden interruption of a physical activity program have not been investigated. Thus, the objective of the present study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 second wave lockdown on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and Physical Activity Level (PAL) of the elderly from Manaus, Amazonas. This prospective applied to 53 seniors, enrolled in a university community program, being proposed by two telephone interviews (Pre = December/2020 and Post = February/2021). HRQoL was assessed by the Short Form 6D and the daily PAL by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. A significant increase in metabolic equivalent was observed (X² = -4.54; p<0.001). However, no significant changes were observed in HRQoL scores and time sitting/week and weekend (P>0.05). Our findings suggest that the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic caused an increase in daily PAL, but without changes in HRQoL and time sitting in the elderly.
