Unexpected Results in Qatar 2022 and their Impact on the Sports Betting Market

  • Nilton Maneiro da Silva

Abstract

Teams that initially appeared as candidates in the Qatar 2022 World Cup fell short of these expectations, such as Germany, Spain and Brazil. Others had results above expectations, such as Japan, Korea, Cameroon and especially Morocco, the first team from an African country to be among the top four of the tournament. Even the two finalist teams, Argentina and France, lost a game in the qualifiers, against Saudi Arabia and Tunisia, respectively. These surprises had a huge impact on the sports betting business.
