Analyze of Sleepiness Level and Sleep Quality for Swimmers and Dropouts

Study During the COVID-19 Pandemic at a Gym

Abstract

Continuing with the usual practice of physical activity, such as swimming, may represent a valid strategy to maintain the quality of sleep in these active individuals. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to compare the level of drowsiness and sleep in swimmers and non-swimmers in times of COVID-19. The sample consisted of 22 adults, aged between 31 and 45 years, being separated into swimming practitioners group (n=12) and dropout group (n=10). The results indicate that swimming subjects, during the COVID-19 pandemic, have lower levels of sleepiness (6.44±2.35 scores) and better sleep (4.44±0.75 scores) when compared to dropout subjects (11±2.31 scores; 9.22±2.05 scores). In relation to the percentage, there is a difference in the levels of 41% in sleepiness and 51% in sleep of practitioners, when compared with dropouts. It is concluded that swimmers who remained active during the pandemic have better levels of sleep and drowsiness than dropouts.
