Pain, Physical Activity Level and Sedentary Behavior in Physiotherapy Students

Abstract

Introduction: University students are exposed to a hypokinetic, stressful routine with high sedentary behavior (SB), which leads to pain. Objective: To analyze the occurrence of pain and its relationship with the physical activity level (PAL) and SB in physiotherapy students. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study, with 64 students, from the Federal University of Jataí, Jataí, Goiás, Brazil. Data collection was performed between May/2021 and February/2022, using an electronic form containing sociodemographic information, daily habits, PAL, SB, occurrence and intensity of pain. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, adopting p<0.05. Results: There was a predominance of women (90.6%), aged 18-27 years (93.8%), single (82.8%) and residents with parents (54.6%). All participants reported some location of pain, with an average of 6.81±3.85 locations, with an average pain intensity of 1.50±0.38. The regions of the lower back (87.5%), cervical (73.4%) and upper back (71.9%) were the main sites of pain. Most college students were active (59.4%) and had a sitting time ≤400 minutes (73.4%). For screen time during the week, mobile phone/video game use (57.8%) and computer/similar (54.7%) for >4h predominated. When analyzing the association of pain locations and intensity with sociodemographic characteristics, habits, PAL and SB, no significance was noted (p>0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that PAL and SB were not associated with pain, however all university students had at least one site for pain and the most affected regions were the spine.
