Prevalence of Shoulder Joint Disorders in Volleyball Players
Abstract
Introduction: Volleyball enjoys widespread popularity and global participation, captivating fans of all genders, ages, and skill levels. It is regarded as a sport of immense difficulty, particularly due to its reliance on upper limb movements. These repetitive gestures significantly contribute to the prevalence of injuries in the shoulder region, making it the most affected area. Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the prevalence of shoulder joint injuries among volleyball players. Methodology: This research employed a cross-sectional, observational, descriptive, and quantitative approach, focusing on volleyball players aged 18 years or older, of both sexes, in the municipality of Limoeiro do Norte, in the state of Ceará. Data collection was conducted through an electronic questionnaire prepared by the researchers and by utilizing the DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) questionnaire to assess the functional incapacity of the upper limbs. Results: The occurrence of injuries and limitations in the shoulder complex among volleyball players is primarily associated with the repetitive execution of sports-related gestures, leading to overloading of this joint. Furthermore, factors such as age, gender, and years of practice contribute to a higher prevalence of injuries. However, it remains uncertain whether there is a direct correlation between the specific position played by the athlete on the court and the occurrence of injuries. Conclusion: The involvement of the shoulder joint in volleyball is evident, exerting a significant impact on the functional capacity of players during both sporting activities and daily life.
