The Use of Dry-Land and Water Tests to Evaluate Swimmers: Scoping Review

Abstract

Swimming is one of the Olympic sports that brings the most medals to the Olympic score, meaning that more and more research is being carried out on the sport to get the most out of the athlete's performance during a competitive event. For this, it is necessary to evaluate the physical capabilities that swimming requires from the athlete, including the ability to produce force. Furthermore, for accurate and reliable results, it is necessary that the tests reach swimming specificity. Currently, aquatic tests such as the tethered swim test and ground tests such as vertical jumps are used and described in the literature and can measure the swimmer's strength production. This scoping review aimed to explore and identify the main aquatic and dry-land tests for evaluating strength and swimming performance. Searches were carried out in the PubMed, Capes, Web of Science and Scielo databases. The identification of the studies evaluated began with reading only the title and abstract, followed by the full reading and finally the proposed inclusion and exclusion criteria. Duplicate articles were removed before the first stage of evaluation. 128 articles were found and after the screening and identification process, 13 articles were included in this review. Our results indicate that the use of strength tests on the ground seems to be a viable option for evaluating the performance of swimmers, however, the use of aquatic tests is essential for the technical team.
