Sports Clubs in Spain Sponsored by Online Casino Companies
Abstract
The 2021 law prohibited the sponsorship of betting houses and online casinos to sports clubs in Spain. This measure sought to reduce exposure to gambling and its possible negative effects. Before the ban, several clubs had agreements with online casino companies. Among the most notable examples are: Real Madrid and Codere, Sevilla FC and Betway, Valencia CF and Bwin, and Athletic Club de Bilbao and Kirolbet. The ban has meant the loss of a source of income for the clubs. However, they have looked for sponsorship alternatives, such as banking entities. The relationship between sports clubs and online casino companies was beneficial for both parties, but now it is a thing of the past. It is important to note that Spanish law still allows the advertising of sports betting, but with certain restrictions.
