Correlation between Vertical Jump and the 30-Meter Sprint Test in University Students
Abstract
The height in Squat Jump (SJ) and Counter Movement Jump (CMJ) vertical jumps is widely used as a metric to assess lower body power. However, few studies have investigated the correlation between the metrics of these jumps and performance in the 30-meter test. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between vertical jumps and performance in the 30-meter test in university students. This is an observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study. Thirty-one male university students participated, with a mean age of 19.7±1.51 years, height of 177±5.97 cm, and body mass of 74.3±13.5 kg. Participants performed three trials of SJ and CMJ on a contact mat, while a photocell system measured the time in the 30-meter test. A non-parametric Spearman correlation analysis was conducted using the Jamovi software (version 2.3.38), with a significance level set at 5%. The results indicated strong negative and statistically significant correlations between the time in the 30-meter test and the height of the SJ (r = -0.71, p<0.001), as well as with the relative power (W/kg) of this jump (r = -0.71, p<0.001). It is concluded that the height and relative power (W/kg) in the SJ jump should be considered the main variables for monitoring lower body power in university students, as these metrics are strongly associated with better performance in the 30-meter test.
