Influence of Strength’s Increase on Soccer Players’ Performance
Measured through Change of Direction
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the possible relation between a strength workout plan and its correspondence with an increase in the performance of soccer players. The data was measured regarding the change of direction (COD) and the prevention of injuries. In order to do this, a sample of 16 professional soccer players from the team Granada CF with experience with strength workout plans was used. A test in different angles (90º, 120º y 180º) was carried out to measure the COD with photoelectric cells. Power was also registered in different actions (forward, lateral and backwards acceleration in VersaPulley), and strength in a leg press, measured at different loads. Furthermore, a follow-up of the injuries shown in the 3 years prior to the intervention process, as well as during the 3 months of the intervention process was carried out. After the intervention period consisting in a strength program made up predominantly of eccentric exercises, an increase in the level of power/strength acquisition was observed. In addition, a high co-relation between the strength workout with a predominance of eccentric work and an improvement in actions such as the change of direction was noted. On the other hand, the global percentage of injuries on the team was lower than prior to the start of the intervention program. Therefore, the relation between strength with a predominance of eccentric work and the performance in soccer moves was positive, as well as the percentage of injuries in the assessed players.
