Food Consumption of Trained Bodybuilders
Abstract
The regular practice of physical exercise combined with proper nutrition is essential for good results. The practice of weight training allows individuals to lose body fat and gain muscle mass. The aim of this study was to evaluate the food consumption of trained bodybuilders. The 7-day food record was used to assess the intake of macronutrients (Carbohydrates, Proteins and Lipids), minerals (Iron, Magnesium, Zinc and Calcium), vitamins (Vitamin C and Vitamin E) and dietary fiber. 26 bodybuilding practitioners (13 men and 13 women aged 26.7 ± 4.5 years) were evaluated. The average energy consumption was higher in men (2397.2 kcal/d vs 1827.2 kcal/d, p<0.05). There was no significant difference between men and women in the consumption of carbohydrates (3.6 ± 1.6 g/kg/d vs 3.8 ± 1.5 g/kg/d), proteins (1.6 ± 0.6 g/kg/d vs 1.9 ± 0.7 g/kg/d) and lipids (1.0 ± 0.5 g/kg/d vs 1.0 ± 0.4 g/kg/d). The consumption of dietary fiber was inadequate in all subjects. The percentage of inadequacy was lower for the vitamins evaluated (Vit C and E) compared to minerals. The highest percentages of inadequacy in both genders were observed for magnesium consumption. Most women (76.9%) had inadequate iron consumption. On the contrary, all men consumed iron properly. It was concluded that the majority of those evaluated had energy, carbohydrate, protein and lipid intake within the recommended ranges. On the other hand, the intake of dietary fiber, minerals and vitamins needs to be improved.
