Exergames, Overweight and Obesity in Children: A Literature Review
Abstract
Public health faces several challenges, including the increase in the incidence and prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents. From this perspective, the fight against obesity and overweight must make use of strategies common to children's daily lives, such as digital games, allowing greater adherence to interventions. This study aimed to identify evidence on the use of Exergames (active video games) to prevent, treat or encourage practices against obesity/overweight in children. To achieve the objective, there was a search in the ScienceDirect scientific databases, Scopus, LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences), and MedLine (Online System of Search and Analysis of Medical Literature). The search was made using the terms: “Exergames”, “Obesity”, “Children” combined by boolean AND logic. The articles should have been published between 2015 and 2020, in Qualis B3 journals and above. The result of this search, after using eligibility mechanisms, reached a number of five articles, a number included in the work. To guarantee the quality of the articles, the CONSORT declaration was used. The data presented in the literature point to very positive evidence for Exergames as a strategy in the treatment of obesity in children. There is a possibility of weight loss, improvement of the Body Mass Index, decrease of subcutaneous adiposity and finally, improvement of cardiometabolic health. It is necessary, however, to realize that the data shown were not equalized and differ in instrument, volume, intensity, sample, etc.
