Sedentary Behavior of University Students in the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Integrative Review

Abstract

Introduction: With the emergency measures to try to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, behaviors and habits of the population were impacted and modified. As a result, sedentary behavior and screen time increased, in addition to reduced outdoor activities. The objective of the review is to analyze scientific studies related to the sedentary behavior of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: This is an integrative review in the years 2020 and 2021. The search took place in the Web of Science, Scielo, PubMed and Virtual Health Library (BVS - MEDLINE) collections, using the descriptors “Sedentary behavior”, “COVID- 19”, “Physical activity” and “Students”, with AND as a boolean operator. Results: 21 articles were selected. It was possible to notice that the students reduced the total volume of physical activity (PA) and started to have an increase in sitting time. These behaviors contributed to a more sedentary life, being associated with more screen time for leisure activities and studies. Social isolation was one of the reasons for this, as students spent less time visiting places and more time at home. Conclusion: It can be seen that the students had their lifestyle affected, with more screen time and sedentary behavior causing an increase in symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression, inappropriate eating behavior and low level of PA.
