Review of the Book Experience and Education by John Dewey. New Publication in Brazil

Abstract

The present work aims to develop a review of the book "Experience and Education" written by John Dewey, which was published again in Brazil in 2023 by Editora Vozes. This review was anchored in the discussion present in a work by Newton Duarte (UNESP-SP), published in 2010 in Brazil, which highlights a more contemporary debate on pedagogical theories. The book by John Dewey, translated into Brazil for the first time in the 70s by Anísio Teixeira [in its second edition], connects us with current situations, is strongly related to the reality of Brazil, even though it was written by an American author. It is important to emphasize that several teachers bring in their matrix many of Dewey's ideas, without realizing this fact. It is not by chance that a new publication of the aforementioned work took place in Brazil in 2023 also by Editora Vozes, bringing the same striking content. In short, this work considers the importance of establishing criteria of experience, such as interaction and continuity, which are capable of guaranteeing student learning, in addition to the formulation of purposes based on experiences throughout the educational process. Education therefore must be conceived as a historical and social phenomenon, everything that can be classified as study needs to take into account in a preponderant way the experience of common life or experience lived by the subject.
