Anthropometric Evaluation, Food Intake and Supplement Consumption of Gym Goers

Abstract

The practice of physical exercise has been reduced more and more over the years, mainly by the abusive use of the technologies of easy access of the contemporary world. It is recommended that all individuals, save those who have some prohibitive pathology, perform exercise for 30 minutes a day, totaling 150 minutes weekly. Thus, some individuals have been seeking to practice physical exercise within academies with distinct goals, such as increased muscle mass and/or weight loss, whether or not related to good nutrition. The present study aimed to evaluate anthropometry and food intake, as well as to know the consumption habits of nutritional supplements of physical exercise practitioners in a city in the interior of the State of São Paulo. An anthropometric evaluation was performed, including weight, height, body mass index (BMI) and body composition assessment by the protocol of seven skinfolds, as well as a qualitative and quantitative assessment of food intake by means of Food records and food frequency questionnaire. In general, individuals presented the percentage of body fat within the adequate with a dietary intake of macronutrients different from what is recommended in the literature, mainly due to the high consumption of protein for some and low carbohydrate intake. As much as they are individuals with the food question, the nutritionist still has a vast field to act assisting in dietary prescriptions for this area.
